Well Saturday night my boy went to a sleepover party at a friends house. 2 am I get a phone call, he is sick, I have to go get him. As soon as I talked to my friend (the other boys mom) I KNEW it was his sugar. So I get there and talk to the Dad who tells me that my son ate a ton of marshmellows at the campfire they had. So we get in the car, and I asked him...what did you eat tonight...he says " just a couple of marshmellows, a brownie, some fruit and 2 yes 2 orange soda's"..........GRRRRR...so I am like, didn't you think that might be a little much? Now I tell him and parents for birthday parties cake is o.k. and what the other kids are drinking is o.k. but I am talking like 1 piece of cake and maybe 1 cup of soda or juice. SO I guess I have to change my approach to birthday parties now. I think he might have learned a bit of a lesson though because he was still not feeling good in the morning. My goodness though that is enough to make a non diabetic person sick in the stomach I am sure! So how do you handle parties?

Hi,
I do what you do. I explain MODY, and that he can have one piece of cake, diet soda, (we usually bring it) No other sugars or treat. My son does not typically like the carb loaded foods. He will eat the frosting but no cake etc. I was the same when I was young and the doctors say we kind of self monitor; we realize we don't feel good so we naturally stay away from the foods that affect us. I am not saying we are perfect with it, sometimes I just want bags of popcorn! Dylan loves fruit, nuts, cheese, yogurt, soup, baked whole grain bread. He cheats with strawberry ice cream, fruit, some juices, donuts, we just don't let him have these often. We provide many treats for the school parties. If the healthy stuff is available he definatly prefers it without complaining. Eating is more expensive for us but I tell myself that we are saving future medical bills.
