I have the same issue in my family. I try to encourage them that getting tested and following the correct course of treatment will make them feel better and possibly extend their life. Since I was diagnosed I have dropped many of the previous meds...

Thank you for sharing more information. I think our children are similar, with the exception that my boys will get blood sugar readings as high as 300-400 in the late afternoon or early evening, especially if they miss their glyburide dose. (They ...

I would get a second opinion if you can, just becasue Insulin Pumps seem like a very big step to take. That is just my opinion though, and I know how difficult it is to get a doctor who can give you a first opinion about MODY. At least where we li...

I question it also, but I was told that 90-95% of MODY2s use diet and exercise successfully, while a small percentage need oral meds or insulin. It seems we are in the small percentage. We haven't gone to anyone for a second opinion and probably s...

I thought so, I am shocked that the docs are considering insulin pumps for MODY 2, we were told that this is the most mild of all MODY and is not treated with insulin....

Hi everyone,
I signed up to attend the Children with Diabetes conference titled Focus on Technology, in Chicago April 24-26. It will be an opportunity to meet others with diabetes and learn more about caring for our children. Is anyone else from this group planning to attend?

New to MODY group

Hi everyone,
Today, we received the results of genetic testing for our 10 year old. He has MODY 2. It is likely that our other three children also are MODY 2, but we should get their results within the next few weeks and know for sure. Both sides of our family have TYPE 2 diabetics, but it is more prevalent on my husband's side. All are thin people, but do have heart disease (blocked arteries are common). Most of their A1Cs are in the low 6s. I will encourage them to get tested for MODY. It took… Continue

Hi,

We are a rare type of Mody 2, R36W. My birth family has a large history of heart attacks and strokes and many die in 40-50s who have it. It is interesting to hear so much of the same from the group. My son and I are taking 2000 mg of Vitamin D and it is helping us with our ammune systym quite a bit. I take magnesium, vit B12, baby aspirin, zocor, a pre-natal vit even though I am not pregnant, and then my beloved Byetta 10 twice a day. We also use artificial sweetners and it helps quite a bit. No regular sugar drinks allowed int he household. I also avoid most hard carbs and grains. I might have whole grain bread once every several days. No whole weat, it is not the same and numbers will skyrocket. We enjoy leguumes, some fruits, veggies, and of course meat. We do cheat sparingly for special occasions. We see a dietician regularly and she usually goes with what we know. I have tested our numbers and charted them on a variety of foods. Some things that make typical diabetics high do not make us high, like watermelon, so we are unique in those discoveries. It is interesting to all of us.

Paula, you asked also about the natural sweetners. My regular pediatrician had my try using non processed sugar just regular cane and honey real maple sugar, this type. I did notice that my family does not spike as high with the natural sugars. I know someone asked about Stevia, and I have not tried that yet. Now the Endo doesn't really have anything to say about the natural stuff, but has told me to limit all processed sugars, simple sugars. We are not on a carb restricting diet, and she doesn't want us on one either. We will be going to see a special dietician at our next clinic visit, so I am really anxious to see what they have to say. I will keep everyone posted!
